Who We Are

Our Story

The Native Center for Support to Abandoned Children and Orphans (CIANAH) is a non-profit organization founded by José Yaun Petsa to protect and support indigenous Awajun and Wampis children who have been orphaned or abandoned in the Yutupis community and surrounding areas.

CIANAH provides children with access to health care, education, food, and clothing. The Center is fully managed by indigenous staff who work voluntarily, guided by a strong commitment to the motto “Serving the most needy.”

In 2010, the Yutupis community suffered an unprecedented hurricane that destroyed two of CIANAH’s houses. The remaining buildings deteriorated over time due to the fragile materials used in their construction.

These events revealed an urgent need to build a new refuge and relocate the Center to a safer and more suitable location. A solid construction will ensure sustainability, allow future growth, and provide a peaceful and healthy environment for the children.

The new refuge will be able to shelter 15 indigenous children and will include administrative offices, storage rooms, a dining area, study room, bedrooms, auditorium, bathrooms, and laundry facilities.

Foundations, walls, and columns were completed in 2011 thanks to generous donations from U.S. visitors and the NGO Vida de la Tierra. Today, we need your help to complete this life-changing project.

Why It Matters

Your Impact

Many children in the Yutupis community are orphaned or abandoned due to complex social challenges, including premature motherhood, high mortality rates, and suicide. These children grow up without family protection or access to basic necessities.

At the same time, Awajun and Wampis communities are experiencing a deep social crisis. Traditional values of family and responsible parenthood are fading, leaving many children vulnerable and alone.

By supporting the construction of the new refuge, you help provide these children with safety, stability, and hope. Your contribution gives them a chance at a healthy childhood, emotional healing, and a future filled with opportunity.

You are not just building walls—you are building lives, restoring dignity, and planting seeds of faith, confidence, and responsibility for generations to come.

What We Need

Thanks to a generous contribution of US $6,500 from the NGO Terre de Vie, the first phase of construction has been successfully completed.

To finalize the project, we must raise US $30,000. These funds will cover labor costs, roofing, and the wooden floors and ceilings of the second floor—essential elements to make the refuge fully functional and safe.
